Shoulder Camera and Reticle

The Over-the-Shoulder Camera

  • It replaces vanilla's rear third-person view (press F5 once). First person and the front-facing view stay vanilla.
  • It is purely visual: targeting still works from your eyes.
  • Defaults: 3.0 blocks behind (range 1 to 8), 0.15 blocks above eye level (range -0.5 to 1.0), 0.85 blocks to the side (range 0 to 1.5; 0 is centred), over the right shoulder, with follow smoothing of 35% (0% is rigid, 100% is softest). All of these can be changed on the Settings page (see Client Settings).
  • Mouse look is never smoothed, and vertical follow is kept tight so jumping doesn't bounce the view.
  • The camera eases in before backing into a wall and never ends up inside a block.
  • It blends back to vanilla's centred view while riding, swimming or crawling, sleeping, dead, gliding with an elytra, riptide-spinning or in spectator, and returns to the shoulder afterward.
  • Swap shoulders with the "Swap Camera Shoulder" key (unbound by default) or in Settings. Message: "Camera shoulder: Left/Right".
  • Inside a Susanoo, the camera rises and pulls back to fit each stage's size. Riding a great summon or tailed beast, it pulls up and back to take in the whole creature.
  • Turning the shoulder camera off in Settings restores vanilla third person, which is handy alongside other camera mods or for accessibility.

The Reticle

  • The reticle is shown only in the shoulder camera. First person keeps vanilla's crosshair, except in Combat Mode.
  • It is hidden when a screen is open, when the HUD is hidden (F1), when it's turned off in Settings, or when there is no aim point.
  • Because the camera is offset, a centre-of-screen crosshair would point at the wrong spot. The reticle is drawn where your eye line really hits: vanilla's target within reach, or the eye line extended up to 64 blocks against blocks.
  • Out of Combat Mode it is a subtle dot. In Combat Mode it becomes the combat reticle (see Combat Mode).
  • Opacity: 80% by default (10% to 100%). White with a faint dark outline.
