Boss Trials Overview
A boss trial is an instanced boss fight for a player and their squad. There are 47 trials: 29 tied to a kekkei genkai, clan, dojutsu or legendary foe (Wood, Ice, Lava, Sharingan, Byakugan, Rinnegan, the Nine-Tails and so on), 8 more for Yang Release, the Medical Corps and the six great summons (whose bosses give their Summoning Contract), and 9 themed trials set in famous places (the Akatsuki Hideout, the Rain Tower, the Hokage's tomb, the Kage Summit, the Uchiha Hideout, Orochimaru's den, Root's base, the Island Turtle and Konoha's Training Ground) that give legendary armor, and the Trial of the Eight Gates, Might Guy's own dungeon, whose only prize is the Might Guy's Approval token that the 8 Gates need.
Each trial is entered from a shrine: a small stone platform with a torii gate, lanterns and a Trial Altar at its centre. You make an offering of ryo at the altar, a 30-second count begins, and everyone standing in the shrine's circle when it ends is taken into a private copy of the trial's battleground in a separate dimension.
Arenas and Dungeons
There are two kinds of trial:
- Arena: one large open battleground. Waves of goons come one after another, then the boss.
- Dungeon: a chain of rooms, each sealed until its goons are dead, ending in a large boss room. A short dungeon is a dungeon with only 2 rooms before the boss; it plays exactly like any other dungeon.
There are 19 arenas (all with 4 waves) and 27 dungeons (6 with 2 rooms, 20 with 3 rooms and 1 with 4 rooms).
What You Win
Beating the boss pays XP and ryo to everyone still in the trial and puts a personal reward chest beside the fallen boss for each of them. Each thing a chest can hold is rolled separately, so one chest may hold several: extra ryo, a chakra fragment, a basic nature's DNA, a piece of armor, the trial's pity token, the boss's own DNA, a reset or reroll token and, in a themed trial, one of its legendary armor pieces. The best of these turn up rarely. Ten pity tokens make the boss's DNA in the original trials, or buy a legendary armor piece in the themed trials, so bad luck is eventually covered.
When a trial ends, everyone still in it must wait 15 minutes (real time) before doing that same trial again ("Trial over. You can do this trial again in 15 minutes; other trials are open now."). Every other trial is open to them straight away.
The in-game tutorial (page 11) sums it up: "Shrines stand around the world, each holding a boss trial. Right-click a shrine's altar to see what it asks, then again to make the offering and enter with your squad. Fight through waves or a dungeon's rooms to the boss. Beat it and a reward chest with your name appears: open it for ryo, fragments, DNA or the boss's pity tokens (10 tokens make that boss's DNA at a Chakra Engineer)."
The Three Tiers of Trial
- Kekkei genkai trials (33 of them, counting the clan, Yang, Medical and summoning trials): level 25 needed, 3,000 ryo offering, reward 8,000 XP and 5,000 ryo, boss 4,000 health, goons 380 health each. The great summons are bigger: Gamabunta, Manda, Katsuyu, Ibuse and the Elephant have 12,000 health, and the Hawk 5,000.
- Great trials (4 of them: the Mangekyo, the Rinnegan, Dust Release and the Nine-Tails): level 40 needed, 8,000 ryo offering, reward 15,000 XP and 5,000 ryo, boss 8,000 health (the Nine-Tails 12,000), goons 650 health each.
- Themed trials (9 of them: Akatsuki Hideout, Rain Tower, Reanimated Hokage, Kage Summit, Uchiha Hideout, Snake's Den, Root, Island Turtle and Training Grounds): level 35 needed, 6,000 ryo offering, reward 12,000 XP and 5,000 ryo, boss 6,500 health, goons 520 health each. Their bosses have no DNA; their pity tokens buy legendary armor instead.
- The Trial of the Eight Gates (1): level 30 needed, 6,000 ryo offering, reward 12,000 XP (no ryo), boss 6,500 health, goons 500 health each. Its only prize is Might Guy's Approval (see the trial below).
- Every offering is ryo only; no trial asks for items.
