Casting Jutsu
Combat Mode
Jutsu are only used in Combat Mode (R). Out of it, right click is ordinary right click, even with a release in hand. Toggling plays an armour sound and shows a message; the HUD swap is animated over 0.5 s (the vanilla hotbar slides down, the combat HUD slides up).
Two Ways to Use a Jutsu
From the loadout bar (empty main hand):
- The combat HUD shows the six slots. Right/Left Arrow move the selection to the next/previous filled slot.
- Right click with an empty main hand uses the selected slot's jutsu.
- Right click keeps its normal use when you are looking at something meant to be used by hand: a block with an interface or storage (chests and the like), doors, trapdoors, fence gates, buttons, levers, beds, crafting tables; your own flying summon (the click mounts it); with Sneak held, your own technique summon (the click sends it back); a player raising their arm for Bite Heal.
From a Release item in the main hand:
- Holding your own release pops up that release's jutsu bar: every jutsu of that nature's tree you have learned, in tree order (top to bottom, then left to right). Right/Left Arrow choose on this bar instead of the loadout (the choice can't change while a charge is in progress). A jutsu used from a release does not need to be in the loadout.
- The bar shows each jutsu's icon, a cooldown shade, an "unaffordable" shade, five mastery pips under each slot, and, for a moment after choosing (and all through a charge), the jutsu's name, its chakra cost and its current charge cap (for example "^5.0", or the infinity sign).
What Right Click Does
Either way, what right click does depends on the jutsu:
- Charged (the default): hold right click; the hand signs play, then the charge climbs; let go to release.
- Instant: cast on the press.
- Held (for example Kamui's intangibility): acts continuously while held, and stops when you let go.
- Own controls: a few techniques use right click in their own way: Adamantine Chains, Amaterasu (held), the Kamui controls, Mystical Palm and Bite Heal (held), the Eight Gates (each press), Shadow Possession and Shadow Strangle (cast on the press).
Sneak + right click shortcuts (checked before casting):
- Dispel your shadow clones (on a shadow-clone jutsu with clones out).
- Let go of a Shadow Possession target.
- End Shadowless Flight.
- Draw the bones of Dance of the Willow or Larch back in.
- Send one of Extremely Steaming Murder's suns at the target.
Recast to dismiss: recasting some jutsu while their effect is out dismisses it instead, free and at once: Mind Transfer (you come home), Double-Headed Wolf, and the C2 clay dragon.
Checks Before a Cast
Every cast goes through the same checks, in this order:
- "You haven't learned that jutsu"
- Blocked (no message): your movement state blocks abilities, or you are berserk as a jinchuriki, bound by Adamantine Chains, or your body is taken by a mind technique.
- Wrong eye: the eye in the right socket for it is missing (taken, or a different eye implanted); a specific message is shown.
- "Open the right eye first": the technique needs one of its eyes active.
- "That needs the right mode active first": for example, Curse Mark: Second Level needs the first level active, and Onyx Chidori needs either Curse Mark level.
- Other requirements: something else is missing (for example Akamaru at your side); its own message.
- "No target in range": for techniques that need a target: Water Prison (24 blocks), Crimson Earth Spider (24), Genjutsu: Tree Binding (24), Dragon Fire Technique (32). Refused before any chakra is spent.
- "Too exhausted to mould chakra": chakra exhaustion.
- "Already forming hand signs"
- "On cooldown: X.Xs"
- "Not enough chakra: needs X, you have Y"
When a cast is refused for cooldown, exhaustion or chakra, the HUD reacts instantly (the bar shakes, the chakra bar flashes).
