The Genin Exam

Every new shinobi starts as an Academy student. The Genin Exam is how an Academy student becomes a Genin, and Genin rank is what opens Genin missions at the village Kage. As the tutorial puts it: "Genin missions once you've passed the Genin Exam, then Chunin and Jonin missions once you've been promoted".

  • The exam is held automatically, server-wide, at the top of every real-world hour (by the server machine's clock and time zone), for every Academy student of level 10 or higher who signs up.
  • It is a live event in three phases: a written test answered in chat, a survival fight against waves of outlaws, and a one-on-one finals bracket between the survivors.
  • Reaching the finals is passing. Winning the finals makes you the hour's champion, which pays extra.
  • No one can die in the exam: a blow that would kill knocks the candidate out instead.
  • If you fail, try again next hour. Nothing is lost, but each stage's ryo is paid only once per shinobi, ever (see the reward summary).

Schedule

  • When the server starts, the next exam is set for the next full hour (for example 15:00 or 16:00), and after each exam ends it is set for the next full hour again.
  • 5 minutes before the hour, sign-up opens and every player on the server sees, in gold: "The Genin Exam begins in 5 minute(s)! Academy students of level 10 and up may sign up:" followed by a bold green clickable [Sign up] button (hover text: "Join the Genin Exam (Academy students, level 10 and up)"). Clicking it runs /kageborne exam join.
  • 1 minute before, everyone gets a reminder: "The Genin Exam begins in 1 minute! Last chance to sign up:" with the same button.

Signing Up

/kageborne exam join is open to every player and works only while sign-up is open:

  • Outside sign-up: "Sign-up for the Genin Exam isn't open. It opens in about <n> minute(s)."
  • Not an Academy student (already Genin or higher): "You're already a Genin: the Genin Exam is for Academy students."
  • Below level 10: "You must reach level 10 to take the Genin Exam."
  • Success: "You're signed up for the Genin Exam. It begins in <n> seconds; be ready." (or "You're already signed up.")

/kageborne exam leave withdraws you while sign-up is still open: "You've withdrawn from the Genin Exam."

At the hour, the sign-up list is checked again. Anyone offline, dead, no longer an Academy student, under level 10, or currently inside a boss trial is dropped.

  • If no one is left, everyone sees "No one signed up for the Genin Exam. The next is in <n> minute(s)." and the exam is skipped until the next hour.
  • Otherwise the whole server reads "The Genin Exam begins with <n> candidate(s)!"
